Pea Breeding Lines Adapted to Autumn Sowings in Broomrape Prone Mediterranean Environments

چکیده

In Mediterranean environments, with mild winters and dry summers, peas are planted in autumn or early winter to profit from rain avoid terminal drought high summer temperatures. The root parasitic weed broomrape (Orobanche crenata) appears as a major limiting factor under these conditions. To address such specific growing conditions associated constraints, targeted breeding is needed. We present here recent achievements the development of pea lines arising wide hybridization program incorporating resistance powdery mildew (Erysiphe pisi) landraces wild relatives. Their adaption sowings fed conditions, their agronomic performance prevailing diseases compared those check cultivars multi-environment field test nine trials performed over three seasons. HA-GGE biplots were powerful tool for comparison among accessions terms stability each trait assessed. Like this, NS22, NS34, NS8, NS39, NS35, NS21 NS83 over-yielded all cultivars. Grain yield was strongly affected by infection, little influence ascochyta blight. All studied showed moderate broomrape, whereas severely infected. Broomrape infection not correlated days flowering, favored long cycles. enhanced temperatures before flowering spring rain, hampered development.

Rubiales D. (2014): Legume breeding for broomrape resistance. Czech J. Genet. Plant Breed., 50: 144–150. Legume cultivation is hampered in Mediterranean regions by the occurrence of the root parasitic weeds Orobanche crenata (crenate broomrape) and Orobanche foetida (foetida broomrape). Strategies of control have been developed but only marginal successes have been achieved. Most control method...

Testing habitat copying in breeding habitat selection in a species adapted to variable environments

The habitat copying hypothesis states that animals use the reproductive performance of conspecifics to evaluate habitat quality and choose their future breeding site. We used data from Audouin’s Gull Larus audouinii (1992–2003), a species adapted to unpredictable environments, to analyse subcolony (as patch) choice within a colony (small spatial scale). We also assessed the suitability of alter...

Estimating Breeding Value of Agronomic Traits in Oriental Tobacco Genotypes under Broomrape Stress and Normal Conditions

In a breeding program, it is important to find out information about the genes action, because knowledge in this field could help the researchers in their crossing programs and realizing effective selection. In this study, breeding values of different agronomic traits in oriental tobacco were predicted using the best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) procedure. For this purpose, 89 tobacco geno...
